Abstract

The new technology and system communication advances are being employed in any system, being more complex. The system dependability considers the technical complexity, size, and interdependency of the system. The stochastic characteristic together with the complexity of the systems as dependability requires to be under control the Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety (RAMS). The dependability contemplates, therefore, the faults/failures, downtimes, stoppages, worker errors, etc. Dependability also refers to emergent properties, i.e., properties generated indirectly from other systems by the system analyzed. Dependability, understood as general description of system performance, requires advanced analytics that are considered in this book. Dependability management and engineering are covered with case studies and best practices. The diversity of the issues will be covered from algorithms, mathematical models, and software engineering, by design methodologies and technical or practical solutions. This book intends to provide the reader with a comprehensive overview of the current state of the art, case studies, hardware and software solutions, analytics, and data science in dependability engineering.

Abstract

Annotation There is an increasing acknowledgement in the engineering community that the response to this challenge, that is, prevention of catastrophic failure, generally requires a systems approach and necessitates engagement of a large pool of multidisciplinary expertise and the deployment of tools for systems analysis. This multidisciplinary pool includes materials science, structural analysis, manufacturing technologies, quality control and evaluation, mathematics, physics, and probability and reliability. Furthermore, from the scientific point of view, there is also an increasing acknowledgement that addressing the complex engineering problems of today requires the use of concepts and approaches that can account for size and time scaling effects. The Special Issue scope embraces interdisciplinary work aimed at understanding and deploying physics of fatigue and failure techniques, advancing experimental and theoretical failure analysis, modelling of the structural response with respect to both local and global failures, and structural design that accounts for scale and time effects in preventing engineering failures.

Abstract

The book "Applied Fracture Mechanics" presents a collection of articles on application of fracture mechanics methods to materials science, medicine, and engineering. In thirteen chapters, a wide range of topics is discussed, including strength of biological tissues, safety of nuclear reactor components, fatigue effects in pipelines, environmental effects on fracture among others. In addition, the book presents mathematical and computational methods underlying the fracture mechanics applications, and also developments in statistical modeling of fatigue. The work presented in this book will be useful, effective, and beneficial to mechanical engineers, civil engineers, and material scientists from industry, research, and education.

Abstract

Researchers from the entire world write to figure out their newest results and to contribute new ideas or ways in the field of system reliability and maintenance. Their articles are grouped into four sections: reliability, reliability of electronic devices, power system reliability and feasibility and maintenance. The book is a valuable tool for professors, students and professionals, with its presentation of issues that may be taken as examples applicable to practical situations. Some examples defining the contents can be highlighted: system reliability analysis based on goal-oriented methodology; reliability design of water-dispensing systems; reliability evaluation of drivetrains for off-highway machines; extending the useful life of asset; network reliability for faster feasibility decision; analysis of standard reliability parameters of technical systems' parts; cannibalisation for improving system reliability; mathematical study on the multiple temperature operational life testing procedure, for electronic industry; reliability prediction of smart maximum power point converter in photovoltaic applications; reliability of die interconnections used in plastic discrete power packages; the effects of mechanical and electrical straining on performances of conventional thick-film resistors; software and hardware development in the electric power system; electric interruptions and loss of supply in power systems; feasibility of autonomous hybrid AC/DC microgrid system; predictive modelling of emergency services in electric power distribution systems; web-based decision-support system in the electric power distribution system; preventive maintenance of a repairable equipment operating in severe environment; and others.

Abstract

This book contains two sections: Chapters 1-7 deal with contact mechanics, and Chapters 8-13 deal with fracture mechanics. The different contributions of this book will cover the various advanced topics of research. It provides some needed background with respect to contact mechanics, fracture mechanics and the use of finite element methods in both. All the covered chapters of this book are of a theoretical and applied nature, suitable for the researchers of engineering, physics, applied mathematics and mechanics with an interest in computer simulation of contact and fracture problems.

Abstract

This open access textbook fills a gap, in that it introduces readers to the theory and applications of the Phase-Field technique. Phase Field, over the years, has emerged as a standard tool for materials research, just as the Finite-Element technique has in structure mechanics. Whereas the few existing textbooks on this topic are intended for advanced readers, this one is made accessible to the widest possible audience, through an engaging, lecture format. The content grows out of a course the authors teach for graduate students at Ruhr-University Bochum. Even readers who may, at first, have no clue at all what a “Phase Field” is and for what it is used, are invited on a journey from general physics of thermodynamics and wave mechanics, through applications in all fields of materials science, up to the central questions of physical being. On this journey all the necessary techniques are detailed, mostly formulated in a mathematical language easily understood by engineers and natural scientists.
